Session 0009.0 — Transcript

App: makers-collective-demo Start: 2026-07-07T13-52 (PST) End: 2026-07-07T17-43 (PST) Type: brainstorming Posture: careful Claude-Session: d3e1574a-6ecf-4498-a3de-18aeecb113ac Checkout: /Users/benstull/git/wiggleverse.org/wiggleverse/makers-collective-demo Worktree: ../makers-collective-demo--wt-media-modules (branch session-0009; removed at finalize) Anchor: none — this demo repo runs unanchored by design (no Gitea issues; standing convention recorded in repo memory)

Launch prompt

Let's replace Loop with something that would be like YouTube, which includes shorts. That is really the learning platform for the public where people can explore and discover content. Lens should support whatever Instagram supports. Both Lens and the Loop replacement (YouTube) should have a section for people you follow that ends when you're up to date and another section for exploration/discovery, which is algorithm based but intentionally a separate experience

Pre-state

  • main at 15b5aa0 (session-0008 merge: Spaces-hub taglines, spec v0.5.1), clean and synced with origin. Demo live at https://hearth-demo.wiggleverse.org.
  • Loop was the TikTok analog: short video only, identity built on rotating human curation ("no slot machine"). Lens was photos-only: "Your feed = who you follow · Chronological — always."
  • Spec §2 carried a hard non-goal — "no engagement-ranked feeds — chronological + human curation + explicit follows only" — backed by INV-10 (Feed honesty), which barred discovery ranking outright.

Plan

Redesign Hearth's media modules in spec + prototype lockstep:

  1. Replace Loop with a YouTube-like module (long-form video + shorts) — the public learning platform where people explore and discover content.
  2. Lens supports the full Instagram-style surface (photos, carousels, reels/short video, stories).
  3. Both modules get a two-feed structure: a Following feed that is finite (ends with a "you're all caught up" boundary) and a separate, intentionally distinct algorithmic Explore/Discover experience.
  4. Land spec (version bump, change/decisions logs) and prototype changes in the same session branch; merge to main; publish.

Session arc

  1. Init. Session gate classified the prompt as brainstorming (design-track: product-lens spec changes + prototype in lockstep). Claimed 0009 (no concurrent sessions), seeded the Plan block, created worktree ../makers-collective-demo--wt-media-modules on session-0009 per repo policy.
  2. Orientation. Read the spec's Loop/Lens treatment and the prototype's two views. Identified the headline tension: the operator's algorithmic Explore ask collides with the §2 non-goal and INV-10 — an amendment, not just UI.
  3. Decision checkpoints (AskUserQuestion, careful posture). Operator chose:
    • Algorithm: Quarantined + interest-based (recommended option) — Following stays chronological/explicit/finite; Explore is a separate, labeled surface, interest-based with a visible "why you're seeing this", never engagement-predictive. Rejected: full YouTube-style engagement ranking; algorithm-over-curated-pool-only (curation kept as an input + named shelf instead of a gate).
    • Space identity: rename (retire Loop). First proposal "Reel" was withdrawn after the Lens answer created a Reel/Reels collision; re-asked with Campfire (recommended) / Matinee / Workshop / Channel — operator picked Channel.
    • Lens scope: all four — carousels, Lens Reels, 24h Stories, and DMs-map-to-Chats (spec note only, no new inbox).
  4. Spec v0.6.0 (commit 2423469): change-log row; header reference gains YouTube; §2 non-goal recast; BUC-14 ("discovery is a door, not a current"); PUC-22/23/24 (finite Following, Explore as a separate room, Lens full photo grammar); §5 narrative + Loop-era tagline note; §6 v0.6.0 note + INV-10 recast; PM-10 ← TEL-9 (caught-up rate as a finiteness check, aggregate-only telemetry); §12 traceability row (PP-2 / BUC-14, OHM non-extraction + consent + ego reduction); Q16 (Explore signal contract → tech-design); D32/D33/D34 + D14 amendment; glossary "Two-feed contract" entry.
  5. Prototype (commit bc4606d): full Loop→Channel rename (theming key, chip classes, nav maps, hub card, unified feed, Chats, personas/profile surfaces, visitor copy); new two-feed machinery (media Following/Explore tabs reusing the Studio-tab pattern, caught-up end-cap with "Choose to explore →", why-chips, story rings with seen/add states, carousel pager + count badge, 16:9 video cards); Channel view rebuilt (channels row, four long-form videos, Shorts shelf, caught-up cap / Explore with Ruth Adler's curated front page + four why-chipped picks); Lens view rebuilt (story rings row, Following with a Reel card + carousel + caught-up cap, Explore with three why-chipped suggestions — the old inline follow-suggestion moved there).
  6. Verification. Headless Chromium (Playwright) drive: 7/7 checks green (hub card, Channel tabs + caught-up + explore switch, Lens stories/ carousel/reel/tabs, story toast, unified-feed navigation), zero console errors; full-page screenshots reviewed for both tabs of both spaces. One test-side selector fix (unified feed is forme, not the maker-space feed); the prototype itself needed no fix.
  7. Review gate. Handed the operator the rendered spec URL on the session branch + the worktree prototype path. Operator: "Go ahead and publish and finalize the session."
  8. Land + publish. Merged session-0009main (60dc906, no-ff), pushed; scripts/publish-demo.sh green — sha256 match at origin, https://hearth-demo.wiggleverse.org HTTP 200.
  9. Finalize. submit-spec.sh idempotent no-op (spec already on main, status: proposed); worktree + local/remote session-0009 branch removed (merged — standing authorization); memory updated; this transcript published.

Deferred decisions

No low-confidence autonomous calls — every consequential decision (algorithm posture, space name, Lens scope) went through an operator checkpoint. Minor editorial calls made without a checkpoint, flagged at review and accepted: Channel's hub tagline copy ("Watch and learn from channels you chose — exploring is a choice, not a current"), demo content for the video/explore cards, and PM-10's ≥50% caught-up-rate target framing.

Cut state

  • main = 60dc906, pushed; spec v0.6.0 (status: proposed) and prototype in lockstep; demo live and verified.
  • Worktree and session-0009 branch (local + origin) deleted after merge.
  • §6 engineering lens remains founding-depth: v0.2v0.6 flags (Q12Q16) all queued for one tech-design session — now including the Explore recommender contract and the caught-up read-state model.

Operator plate

  • Nothing blocking. Optional: reword Channel's hub tagline if the current copy doesn't sit right; graduation of the spec (status: graduated) stays the operator's explicit call.

Next session

/goal Complete the Hearth SPEC's engineering lens (tech-design session) for the flagged v0.2v0.6 work: biz/* featuring contracts + CatalogFeature lifecycle, BusinessMembership admission/attendance lifecycle (Q12/Q13), the filter manifest shape + disposition contract + profile-scope rendering pipeline + registry review mechanics (Q14), the object-kind contracts (Q15), and the two-feed contract's Explore recommender — signal contract, "why" audit, curation inputs, caught-up read-state (Q16) — per the §6 version notes in specs/hearth-platform-v1.md
